Cleveland GAA Men’s Gaelic Football – 2023 USGAA Jr C Champions

Competing in the Men’s Junior C Division, the Cleveland St. Pat’s – St. Jarlath’s Gaelic Football team won the national title with a convincing 3-0 showing against teams from Raleigh, NC, Denver, CO  and Delaware County, PA.  The tournament panel featured 24 players representing Northeast Ohio, with 6 Irish-born players currently residing in NEO.

Coached by veteran Gaelic Footballers Jim Coyne, John Kernan, Jay Lowry, and Simon O’Doherty, the team gained momentum after a strong regular season to win the Midwest Tournament on their home pitch in early August before taking the national title in Denver.  This is the first Junior title since 2015 for the Cleveland men’s team.  Early in the season, Coyne knew his team was special.  “This is a talented group of young men,” commented Coyne. “With a mix of veterans and some newcomers, they jelled as a team and worked hard.  I was confident this team would be competitive on the national stage.” The team’s joint-captains Alec Stott and Dan Murray attribute their success to players buying into the team’s ethos, heightening their fitness and physicality, and coming together to operate as a cohesive unit on the pitch.

Cleveland has a rich history of Gaelic sports and in 1948 the St. Pat’s Club was established. St. Pat’s would go on to win several national football championships at senior level in 1962, 1964-1966, and 1968. Years later in 1980, St. Jarlath’s formed to become a perpetual favorite within the Midwest and collect national titles at the junior level in 2005 and 2006. After the 2015 national title by St. Pat’s at the junior level, the two Cleveland clubs rejoined. In 2023, the Cleveland Saints’ Gaelic Football team won the Jr C title.
